Sure it does; it simply writes to ~/.purple/logs/ blindly.  If
~/.purple/logs is a symlink to some other location, it will write to
that location.  Note that this is *precisely* how older Gaim versions
and Pidgin are coerced into logging to the same place.  When you run
Pidgin for the first time, it moves your logs to ~/.purple/logs, and
creates a symlink to ~/.purple/logs in ~/.gaim.
