Yeah, it does somewhat resemble beat-up, but also dazed. Messed has
x's in the eyes and a tongue to the side, but beat-up doesn't have the
x'd eyes and dazed doesn't have the tongue. My best guess is that it
is supposed to represent being "messed up" from intoxication. From

I think this is different than the 'dazed' emote we currently have,
which has a broader meaning (from
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dazed ):

a dazed condition; state of bemusement: After meeting the author, I
was in a daze for a week.
