I'm the mentor on this one. Michael is referring to "for 3.0.0" when he
said "later". The plan is to develop this until it's done doing API/ABI
additions only. If we're close to a 3.0.0 at that point, we'll just
merge for that, changing signatures, etc. If we're not, we'll release
with the non-blocking stuff in and then remove all the blocking stuff
for 3.0.0, changing the function names at that time.
None of this has been released yet.
