Restoring compatibility with old plugins

As most of you know, there was a change in 2.3.0 in regard to how hidden
conversations are managed - instead of being attached to a dummy hidden UI
Window, they are created without a UI at all.

While this is a great idea in that it is more efficient and more elegant, it
causes problems because it changes the behavior in such a way that what used
to be a reasonable assumption for plugins to make is no longer the case.

I think we need to restore the previous hidden conversation methodology in
2.3.1 to fix what is effectively an ABI breakage.

I figured I'd post this here to get the ball moving.
