I apologize for the duplicate thread here.  Regarding using gstreamer for just the UI.  I don't see why it has to be confined to the UI.  As I understand, gstreamer itself has no binding to X or console or anything for that matter.  More of a multimedia framework.  It's the appropriate sink for
 example that will play the media to an X window. So, any UI (or console application for that matter) using libpurple can deal with the media however it wants to.  But gstreamer can define the interface and do decoding incoming streams and encoding outgoing streams.  And the UI defining what to do
 with the decoded stream(s) and where to get the stream(s) to encode.  Is this not correct?
