If it is simple to design such icons, please submit them for our
consideration.

Note that we have already tried and rejected small emblems overlaid on
the protocol icons to represent state, as they were both confusing and
hard to distinguish.  The state representation needs to be
a) consistent across all protocols, b) large and easy to distinguish
with respect to the size of the icon, and c) as intuitive as possible
-- note that we do understand that "intuitive" is relative, here, and
the current symbols (green dot, clock, paper) are a compromise.
