Regardless of the implementation, it's important that the solution be
compatible with the official IM programs.  In the case of XMPP the solution
should adhere to the Jingle XEPs.

As for the implementation... libpurple needs a general framework that can
allow the different protocol plugins to use whatever codecs are used by that
IM network.  I believe some progress has already been made in this direction
in the im.pidgin.pidgin.vv branch of mtn.
