In general, I'm not sure that this error message can be any more clear.
Additionally, this is a distro question, not a Pidgin question.
If you're running an older version of Ubuntu, you might see this because
ubuntu-desktop depends on the pidgin package. (In newer versions, it's a
Recommends.)
Anyway, what you want to do is start up Synaptic and try to remove
Pidgin. See what other stuff is going to be removed if you do that. If
you're okay with it, proceed. If not, stop and ask your distro people.
