Unable download Pidgin for Ubuntu

Correct. That's currently the official (Pidgin) way to install Pidgin on
Ubuntu (or any *nix). I'm going to be doing a PPA soon though, which
will mean you wouldn't have to build from source and could get updates
through the normal system tools.
