There are a lot of stuff you can get into that would be really helpful.

I can suggest you some ideas

The webkit branch im.pidgin.soc.2009.webkitmessageview I want to move
the code from the plugin to core so we can eventually replace
GtkIMHTML with GtkWebView which can have a similar API as GtkIMHTML
have now. Then add a theme loader that can manage Adium Themes. That
would make it far easy to merge it to 3.0.0.

Msnp16 branch It's almost ready but still have some bugs on it, I
can't focus on it anymore because I'm working on the SLP refactor now,
it would be GREAT if you can tackle the remaining bugs in there.

There have also a lot of talk about implementing some kind of cache.
IIRC it was for custom emoticons but it can be done in a little more
generic way so it can be used in other places.

You can also take a look at
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/BranchStatus and take one of the
branch, get it merge ready and propose a merge request.
