One server or listeners

Dear Developers community,

I am wondering if the application open one session from my computer to a
server control by pidgin and from the server a st of sessions is opened
(one for every "application", e.g ICQ, MSN).

In order words, do the application use proxy to connect my computer to the
IM servers or the connections are from my computer directly to the servers.
