finch + messed up "screen" using screen

Exactly. In the putty preferences in Window -> Translation set the 
charset in the dropdown menu to be UTF-8. Assuming server side is UTF-8 
too. To check this, do "echo $LANG" on the console, depending on the 
distro it _might_ tell you what your charset is.
