Hi,

I don't know whether this email addy is the right place to write to but i hope my report will eventually find the right people.

I upgraded to Pidgin 2.4.0 and since then I have experienced problems with ICQ message encoding. I kept my Windows-1250 character settings in advanced tab of account settings from version 2.3.1 (and tried several other encodings such as UTF-8, various ISO-something...) but was unable to receive any messages containing special Czech characters. My buddies were using Pidgin 2.3.x and QIP with which I had no problems before upgrading from Pidgin 2.3.1.

Instead of receiving the message from the other people I got a warning in the IM window saying that there was a transmission error and that the other party uses a differerent encoding or that their client is buggy - which I doubt since the other people were using the same IM clients that worked with Pidgin 2.3.1. perfectly - the only thing I had ever experienced were a few slightly distorted messages that were readable anyway (which was better option compared to an automated message generated by Pidgin that does not reveal the contents of the message itself ;-).

I suspect that the problem might be related to GTK distributed with Pidgin 2.4.0. When I replaced Pidgin version 2.4.0 with 2.3.1 while keeping the newer GTK, the problem persisted. Only after complete reinstalation of both GTK and Pindgin 2.3.1 the client started to behave normally.

Tech info:
OS: Win 2000 Professional, SP4, Pidgin (Czech environment)

Hope the above will help you finetune the best IM client around. Keep the good job, folks, and thanks for all the effort and work done.
