problem connecting

Hi,

I had the same problems for weeks after Pidgin had been working flawlessly
for a very long time using the default settings. I finally found a
combination of settings that worked. It apparently is a delicate balance -
because if you switch just one, there is a domino effect and all accounta
then fail as before. My only account that held steady throughout was Yahoo
(which was no comfort since I have almost no buddies on Yahoo). All the
others consistently timed out, failed, never connected, or disconnected
randomly.

Here are the settings that finally worked for me on a Windows XP Pro
machine:

MSN (Live.com:
Port 1863
V - Use http
Gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

ICQ:
Port 443

Skype:
V make skype online./offline...
V automatically check for updates
V Auto start skye if not running

Yahoo:
All the defaults

AOL/AIM:
Port 443

XMPP (Google):
V Force old...
Connect: 443
Server: talk.google.com

Good luck

The first two were already set that way. The Port was 5222, so I changed it
to 5223 but it hasn't helped.

>> Yahoo error message: could not establish a connection with the server:

Yahoo Japan is NOT checked. There is no option to use (or not use) SSL.

HTTP Server Method was not checked. It is now, but it hasn't helped.

Correct.

That's how I have it set.

Same settings in both. I never had a problem with Pidgin until last night,
so the settings in Pidgin were the defaults that had always worked before,
and the Trillian settings are also the defaults, which have always worked.

Hmm... Well, it is always possible that something has happened with
Your installation or that Your ISP is doing something. :-\ FWIW, have
You 'Upgraded' to 2.4.2 yet?

Also, what O/S are You using? It appears as though You are composing
from Yahoo's Webmail screen.

Using Force Old SSL while trying to use port 5222 will never work, and
switching to port 5223 and enabling that option should not be necessary
(unless your firewall blocks port 5222, or your xmpp server for some
reason doesn't listen on port 5222 but most do).
