I had the same problems for weeks after Pidgin had been working flawlessly
for a very long time using the default settings. I finally found a
combination of settings that worked. It apparently is a delicate balance -
because if you switch just one, there is a domino effect and all accounta
then  fail as before. My only account that held steady throughout was Yahoo
(which was no comfort since I have almost no buddies on Yahoo). All the
others consistently timed out, failed, never connected, or disconnected
randomly.

Here are the settings that finally worked for me on a Windows XP Pro
machine:

MSN (Live.com:
Port 1863
V - Use http
Gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

ICQ:
Port 443

Skype:
V make skype online./offline...
V automatically check for updates
V Auto start skye if not running

Yahoo:
All the defaults 

AOL/AIM:
Port 443

XMPP (Google):
V Force old...
Connect: 443
Server: talk.google.com
