recent issue with windows live/msn - invalid response

I just noticed a little ago that my msn contacts are dead. I tried
re-starting and re-enabling the msn says "windows live authentication:
invalid response"

Regular msn/live client doesn't work. I've tried troubleshooting the
error and nada. error code# 80048820

Any help would be appreciated.
like to get it working on pidgin first
