Wont let me log into yahoo account

My pidgin will not let me log into yahoo messenger.... I can add the account and enable it but all it says is connecting it is really getting irritating... it is the only way that I can talk to my kids in Wisconsin, I am in Oklahoma.... I am using Ubuntu 8.04
