Do you really expect to get help by sending an empty email without
describing the problem you're having and what you've tried?

been noticing of late that Yahoo's IM facilities have been timing out and
simply not responding. My next step is to recreate the account, but I'm
not sure that this will fix the problemm - it doesn't seem to be a logical
step yet.
That said, has anyone else experienced this, and what have you done to fix
it if anything?

Are you running Pidgin 2.5.8? If not, upgrade. Also, read
http://theflamingbanker.blogspot.com/2009/06/some-clarification-on-yahoo-iss
ues.html
(and note that most of the bugs referenced there have been fixed by 2.5.8,
but
the rest is still relevant).

Sunil, the problem is that you have told us nothing of the symptoms, and
this is why we are not answering except with requests to elaborate -
it is because, frankly, you have not given us the ability to help. We
need more information. Otherwise, this is like going to the mechanic,
telling him that your car is broken down, but you don't have your car -
and you're not saying anything more than that your car is broken down.
Much like you must hand over control of your automobile to your
mechanic if s/he is to fix it, until you help us by giving us more
details, we cannot help you.

If you would be so kind as to please, PLEASE do the following:

1) put something in the way of what's going on in the message body

2) Use details that we will need

3) do not simply put a brief explanation of the problem in the subject
line without putting more details in the body of the email. This is
not SMS.

..then we can support the problem. Unless you do this, you have not
given us the ability to assist you.

Here's a few pointers to put you on the right path:

1) What version of Pidgin are you running? What operating system?

2) What steps are you taking to put your IM username into pidgin?

3) Where does the failure occur, and what happens at the point of
failure? (i.e., as you walk along the path, where does the path end?)

Just built 2.5.8 in Debian Lenny (and aptitude'd all the appropriate
lib*-dev packages), but now when I run, it won't start.

>From a terminal window, I get this:

pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol:
purple_smileys_get_all

Note the association with libpurple-dev 2.4.3-4lenny2.

In short, what's missing, and how to fix?

If you still have libpurple 2.4.x installed on your system, and it's in
/usr/lib rather than /usr/local/lib, it may be getting picked up ahead
of your new libpurple. Generally speaking, Pidgin always requires the
most recent minor version of libpurple (so 2.5.0 or higher). For best
results, you should use the same version of both, since they are
developed and tested together.

Try removing all libpurple and pidgin related packages from your package
manager, run ldconfig and see if that helps.

Ripped out the libpurple that was already installed with the tree, and
that did the trick - thanks for the pointer!

Hey Ramy. Please make sure you're using Pidgin 2.5.8. If that
doesn't fix it, maybe try disabling any 3rd party plugins you may have
installed? If you're still having problems after that, we have some
instructions at http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports that
you can follow. Specifically the section "What to do if Pidgin
crashes."

Thanks,
Mark

Hi

I've had a few ongoing issues and the help doesn't mention these.

1.	Some of the people I Jabber cannot see that 'I'm typing' even though
I've selected that option in Preferences - same deal I cannot see that they
are typing. (up til now I've been told it's coz I'm on a different version
than the others but today I was able to upgrade to the latest version so
cannot see how that can be an issue any more).

2.	My spell check never has worked even though I have check spelling
enabled in Preferences.

3.	Today I removed a person and then added them again - I can now see
them but they cannot see my up to date status and only see that I am
offline.

Help please - thanks Tash

I got some additional information from him, but by applying general
Linux crash debugging processes, although unfortunately forgot to reply
on list and couldn't get him back on list.

He's using Ubuntu 9.04, although I didn't get specific Pidgin version
information and this is the stack trace, unfortunately from a stripped
binary:

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.
