can't add buddy XXx to group server list on account yyy

I have a yahoo.com account set up in pidgin now.  My friend wanted me to had him as a contact.  His account is XXX at hotmail.com.  When I go to add buddy put in the XXX at hotmail.com, put in an alias, then select group buddys; i get this error

can't add buddy XXx to group server list on account yyy

alias appears with a big red circle by it, not on server list by his name.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am using 2.5.8
