If you are not using AIM, which instant messaging service are you using. 
  Pidgin is a client to various instant messaging services, and cannot 
work without using one.  Your problem  lies with whichever service you 
are using.

(I still believe that will be AIM.)

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.
