Disconnected : Unable to connect

You connect to an account (like an AIM or ICQ or MSN or Yahoo or XMPP
etc account), not to a "buddy list".

What service is your account on?  What version of Pidgin are you using?
 Please also attach the Help->Debug Window from attempting to connect to
your account.
