You can enter the smileys by clicking the Smile! button on the toolbar
in your conversation and then on the smiley you want to add to the
conversation.  If you hold your mouse over one of these buttons it will
show a tooltip with the key combination you can use to enter the smiley
directly.

Some IM services will have a different set of standard smileys than others.
