Text input does not appear in the chat window

OS: Ubuntu 9.04
Pidgin version: 2.5.5
Internet connection via cable

The pidgin im has quit displaying my input in the conversation once I 
hit send. While typing, the input is displayed in the message window at 
the bottom, but once I hit send, it is not displayed in the conversation 
segment of the display.

I did not make any changes in my settings. It just quit working properly.

Please advise.
