Chatting with more than one buddy

I've had several users complaining of the Pidgin window "hi-jacking" what
they're doing when another user IMs them - for example, someone might be
editing a Word document and the new message window pops-up and interrupts
their typing. What setting controls this?
Thank you!

You start a chat (muc) room and all join it.
Buddies->Join a Chat
or
Conversation->Join a Chat
There is a specification available for a process by which one can
"upgrade" a normal conversation into a muc room but it isn't particularly
well supported and has some less than well designed parts to it.
