resource in xmpp

Hi.

When I'm using pidgin with a xmpp account, in a chat windows it appear like
account at jabberdomain.com/resurceNUMBER. What does NUMBER  mean here? It's
something like session number? It's posible to enable and disable the
visibility of this number?
