IMs not popping up.

Hi,
I just downloaded Pidgin yesterday. The problem is when someone IMs me I do not 
know it unless I happen to click on the pidgin icon (minimized at bottom of 
screen). My co-worker has Pidgin and when someone IMs her it pops up on her 
screen. I have tried all the preferences but nothing works...When I compare her 
preferences to mine--she has a different list under "conversations". Do you know 
how to fix this?
