Google New-Mail indicator count wrong

I suspect this is an issue on Google's side, but when connecting to
Google via XMPP the new-message indicator seems to be inconsistently
wrong.

I don't have an exact list of steps to reproduce it but the count goes
up and down as messages are received and read, but occasionally upon
receiving a new message it jumps up and never recovers until the Inbox
hits zero (or pidgin is restarted)

Any options/tweaks or is it just a server-side limitation?
