Customized Smileys won't show up

I'm surprised that MSN is still compatible with 2.8.0.  Microsoft 
continually make undocumented changes, so it is important to keep Pidgin 
up to date.

This might not solve your problem, but still really needs to be done 
before any further debugging is attempted.
