Cannot connect to XMPP through AT&T internet

Ryan Christian spake unto us the following wisdom:

This is a problem with certain set top boxes that have DNS proxies
that do not understand DNS SRV.  If the only box you have is the AT&T
box, this is their problem.  If you also have a personal set top
box/router/AP/whatever, it may be the problem.
