finch charset issue

You still have the system finch installed.  This is likely to cause
all kinds of problems with your newly compiled finch.  You need to
uninstall the system finch, and make sure you run 'make install' on
the compiled finch.

That said, I will be surprised if that's the actual root of your
problems.  After you do the above, run 'ldd' on the finch you
compiled yourself, and make sure it is linked against libncursesw (not
just libncurses).
