Pidgin would be "security neutral" - that is, it is as secure as the 
environment you use it with.

To expound here, Pidgin provides support for standard security 
features as available through all the IM protocols it supports.  Moreover, 
passwords are NOT stored in plaintext (examination of 
~/.purple/accounts.xml) - I'm not clear on the encryption scheme though.
