If, as its Wikipedia articles hints, it piggy backs another IM protocol, 
you still have traffic flow intelligence, and its use would be detected, 
which I suspect is a sacking offence in the sort of organisation that 
uses the MITM proxies referred to by the OP.

The OTR sales pitch specifically states that Trilian Secure IM is unsafe 
against MITM attacks, which is probably why Trillian doesn't cause problems.
