Ubuntu | Texting Failure

I installed the latest version of Pidgin for Ubuntu and when I sign into AIM and let all the contacts pop up saying they've signed in I try to text someone like I normally would using AIM on Windows and it just comes up saying error, not signed in.  Do you know of a fix for this?  I'd really like to get this working.
