There are a couple Google-specific considerations. If you use two-factor 
authentication, you'll need to use an app-specific password for pidgin.

I believe you will also need to ensure that 
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps is set to "on" 
as pidgin stores passwords.
