Dear Michael,
All the clients experiencing this issue deny having any other instance of Pidgin running---only one device using Pidgin. What other options? Is there a cache file that I can delete? It's a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop.
Sincerely,

Mark,
This is because the user has two devices that are connected to that XMPP
acccount. Since one of the devices has a status of available, the server
is overriding the away status and still showing them as available.
