Recovering Log or Buddylist

That is not entirely true.  We also cache a local copy, which is in
~/.purple/blist.xml.  This is the copy that Richard is referring to.
Likewise, the logs are stored locally in ~/.purple/logs/<account id>.
This is in addition to whatever server behaviors may be in effect.
