Buddy Issue

Hello,I downloaded and installed the Pidgin Messenger. I finally figured out how to set it up to access the internet.Now (and since from the beginning) when I try and add contacts to my buddy list, all the options are grey (inaccessible)except for "View User Log", "Show", "Sort Buddies", and "Exit".How to I get access to the other options?I read the FAQ and other things on the site, but never did see this problem covered.Thank you,Kerry Harkey
