Comment:

 It sounds like you are using a jabber server.  This is something that can
 and should be done at the server, rather than at the client.  However, if
 you insist on using the client, there is a plugin in the plugin pack at
 guifications.org (not guifications itself, but the plugin pack they
 distribute) that will help you.
