 I agree, the conflation of address book and roster seems to be a bad idea.
 The best solution would be for Google to either separate them or perhaps
 have an option in an address book entry to not show this contact in the
 roster.

 yourself to your buddy list is something which is a good thing to have,
 your issue here is really that Google Talk conflates the two because you
 want it in one location and not in the other. I firmly believe that making
 gaim unable to do this (even with an option) is the wrong way to fix such
 an issue, especially since I don't believe adding yourself to your jabber
 roster is something that is really even explicitly supported by the XMPP
 specifications.
