 AFAIK you can already set the shortcuts yourself. See
 [http://pidgin.im/faq.php#q21]. I didn't really understand what you meant
 by a messy buddy pounce. The main reason I want a separate group is
 because I don't want my offline buddies mixed in with everyone else, but I
 don't want to arrange by status because I like my online buddies arranged
 alphabetically. Also, it's come in handy for things like checking an
 offline buddy's settings (screen name and such) without having to show
 offline buddies, which can take a while if there are a lot of people to
 show as opposed to expanding a collapsed group which shouldn't take as
 long.
