 However, I think that it is mostly the problem of the user. If he needs
 this functionality, he will simply rename the conflicting alias to "-Mark"
 or "+John" or something else upon seeing that he can't IM to someone not
 on the list.

 So, that would not totally remove this ability, just make a good
 compromise between primary and secondary functionality. How can I
 currently open window FAST to a specific user instead of clicking through
 my contact list? Without the hotkeys implemented this seems the next best
 thing. But if the functionality stays the same it's really useless in my
 case - most of the people I need to talk to use screennames which are not
 in english or too complicated to remember and type in fast.
