Comment (by lschiere):

Say (this is a real life case, but with changed names) there are
screennames PidginUser and UserPidgin. I know UserPidgin, but not
PidginUser. I aliased UserPidgin to "Pidgin User", because it makes more
sence that way. Now I type in "Pidgin User" in that box. Pidgin realizes
this is an alias, and IMs the right person (if we implement your request).
 So far so good.

Now though, someone askes me to talk to PidginUser, the screenname. I
don't have this person on my buddy list, but I've been asked to talk to
them. I cannot do so, because Pidgin will think I'm typing in an alias.
This is particularly problematic on whitespace ignoring protocols such as
 AIM.

A more common case would be trying to IM whoever happens to own the
screenname "Mark" (or John, or Sally, or whatever) when there is a "Mark"
 alias on your buddy list.

Again, as I said originally, this would remove the ability to IM some
people not on your buddy list, which I consider the primary purpose of
 that dialog.
