Comment (by bogdanb):

About that configure script: I'm quite new at this, but I was wondering,
why is configure.ac monolithic? I'm sure it supports some kind of
hierarchical configuration... in fact, I've seen some functions just for
 that.

Since libpurple, Pidgin and Finch are supposed to be pretty much
independent, why do we do all the checks in a single place? Even more,
each protocol uses its own checks, most of which are not useful for the
others. There must be a way to compartmentalize the 2k+-lines
 configure.ac...

Who's the guy who's most "in charge" about this? I would volunteer to do
the grunt work of splitting the file into subdirectories, if someone would
just guide me a bit and I was sure it's not in vain. (I.e., I want to be
certain it's not against some previous decision to keep in monolithic.)
