 Which is just dandy, if the unaware user deletes ~/.pidgin, because he/she
 uninstalled the latest beta/version of Pidgin while keeping with the old
 (albeit somewhat defunct) Gaim.

 Sure, new and old will work along side of each other, because of the
 links. That problem was solved (at least for *nix-platforms). I have read
 that thread, and that is not the issue here.

 The crucial point is that, the user should be explicitly notified,
 before/while the migration occurs, so that he/she can take appropriate
 actions. Preferably, the user should be presented with a choice. (What's
 the big deal in letting the user know?)
 While this may be a non-issue in your mind, because all should upgrade and
 nobody in their right minds would be using the old versions, some may just
 not be as inclined to upgrade right away.
