 The problem with making it a choice for the user is that the user will
 undoubtedly in some cases chose not to migrate, and then complain that
 their preferences were lost, or would chose to migrate, forget doing so,
 and put us back in this same situation that you are worried about.

 Honestly, the case of someone choosing not to continue with pidgin is not
 worth considering.  While some will do so, they will be going back to a
 version that will cease to be supported, and be their statically, or they
 will fork our code, in which case the fork authors can deal with this.
