 Still you miss the point of telling the user.

 Incorporating your criticism I propose something like the following as a
 message before migrating:

 "User data from an old installation of Gaim has been found on your
 computer. Press 'Ok' to continue and this data will be migrated to Pidgin.
 (If you do not wish to migrate this, temporarily rename '~/.gaim' before
 continuing)"

 "User data will be moved from '~/.gaim' to '~/.purple'. NOTE: Data
 incompatible with Pidgin will not be moved/converted."

 For *nix:
 "In order for your old installation to continue to work, symbolic links
 have been placed within '~/.gaim' to enable sharing. CAUTION: Certain data
 is not shared and will require you to manually move it to Pidgin, if you
 continue to use the old installation."

 For Windows:
 "A copy is retained in '~/.gaim' for your old installation to continue to
 work. CAUTION: Further generated user data must be manually moved to
 Pidgin, if you continue to use the old installation."
