 I'm not terribly worried about folks who alias buddies or something and
 have those changes lost when they switch. The decision to *DO* the
 migration was made so that people could do exactly what you describe: run
 Gaim and Pidgin in parallel without disasterous effects.

 If someone deletes a directory recursively without looking at its
 contents, that's just silly. Now, if they look in .gaim/logs and see
 content (because they dereferenced the symlink) and then delete .purple,
 well, that's bad, but I'm not sure there's much we can do. However, users
 that don't understand symlinks generally end up using the GUI, where they
 most likely have a Trash folder, so there's at least some hope for them.

 We're not going to give users a choice, for the reasons Luke mentioned.
 I'm opposed to a message for the simple reason that it's going to confuse
 more users than it helps.
