Comment (by Alexqw):

Ugh, my head hurts, that actually worked. Even though the password is set
the use upper and lower case, it only works if I type it all as lower
case. I went to aol.com and tried it with both mixed case and all lower
case; both worked. What's worse is if I type in the incorrect
capitalization, it still works at aol.com. So it seems that AOL converts
it to all lowercase - ouch.
I read something awhile ago that AOL only verified the first 8
characters of a password and did it all in lowercase. If this was the
case all of the time I would think other users would have run into this
issue and it would have been the default behavior in Pidgin. But, I would
guess that most pidgin users who use AIM are only AIM users and not AOL
users. This account is an AOL account. Could it be that AIM accounts are
case sensitive and AOL accounts are not? This could be the case if AIM
and AOL accounts are stored on different servers and use different
 password rules.
   Thoughts, comments?
Thanks for the suggestion and the help from everyone else so far.
