Comment:

 Regarding static changes going unnoticeable: there were plenty of
 complaints about the blinking icon in the past, which is why there is an
 option to turn it off. It may go unnoticeable for those with sound off and
 no other means of notification, but pidgin provides many options for
 notifying the user of unread messages.

 Regarding Gnome toolbar notices: there are a few plugins available that do
 this now including pidgin-libnotify and guifications. It's likely this
 functionality will be integrated directly into pidgin in the future:
