 I did try implementing the volume control with native win32 APIs when I
 first added the feature. I was not able to control it independently of the
 main mixer controls (without relying on DirectSound or some other sound
 library).

 I did try directly scaling the audio on win32 as well but kept running
 into distortion issues. The software scaling code should still be in
 version control (it was yanked when gstreamer support was added).
